Fly Fishing eBook Review: The Fly Fishing Guidebook

We don't all have the same level of experience with fly fishing, we may not even share the same motives for fishing. Maybe you just came across this review looking for a good gift for that special person that loves fly fishing! Anyway, stick with me as I review this eBook for you. I'll try to lend my 50 years of fishing experience (30 of them fly fishing) to give you additional information around this product authored for the sport of fly fishing. The review has three main goals:
  1. Review from the perspective of a seasoned Colorado fly fisherman.
  2. Assess relevance to fly fishing.
  3. Assess usefulness of the content related to fly fishing

Fly Fishing Review Commentary:

I found that the book covers all the basic questions regarding fly fishing and includes an easy to understand outline finding targeted information. I especially liked the explanation of the leader construction in the “Designing and Building Leaders” section on page 19. Even after 50 years of fishing (30 as a fly fisherman), I learned that there is a 60/20/20 principle for leader construction. I had never heard of that before, so I took copious notes.

One area of confusion was the “Dry Fly Fishing Vs Wet Fly Fishing” section on page 11. The author states “Lure fishing is another form of wet fly fishing” and goes on to discuss lures and spinner baits. Although it was not clear to me, I assume the focus shifted to spin fishing with these baits and not fly fishing. A beginning fly fisherman reading this section might try to put a lure or spinner bait on a fly rod. In my mind, a little more clarity is needed here.

Overall, the book was easily understood and I could quickly access specific information that I was interested in. There were several instances where pronouns were missing in the text (an edit is needed), but the writing was straight forward and clear.

Purchase/Download Experience:

Our experience was a little different as we requested the product for review purposes using the customer service center at the authors landing site. As can be imagined, this isn't the standard method for obtaining the product ;-)

It did, however, exercise the customer service contact form and we were able to experience rapid and courteous responsiveness. We were provided with a link for immediate review via a polite and friendly email.

Part of the process involved submitting our contact email address. We have NOT received any identifiable spam as a result of this process. KUDOS!!
